Systems work, billed on terms
The business is an IT consultancy in Auckland. It designs and sets up systems for its clients, mostly other businesses, and bills for that expertise once the work is delivered.
It started with a solid base of clients from early on.
Clients pay on terms. The work is done, the invoice goes out, and the money follows on the client’s timetable. On a larger piece of work a client might pay a deposit first, with the balance on the final invoice.
A new business, paid later
A new consultancy does the work first. The invoices for it go out on terms, so in the early months the money for finished work was always a step behind.
The work was there, and the clients were good for it. It was the timing that needed smoothing.
At sign-up in November 2023, the owner told the FundTap team they only needed a modest amount against invoices for cashflow, nothing larger.
Funding a handful of invoices
They signed up in November 2023 and connected Xero. In December 2023 they funded their first invoices, eight in that first month, which is still their busiest.
Each time, the owner chooses the invoice and the fee is shown upfront, before anything is committed. They pay only on the invoices they fund, with no ongoing fees, and their clients pay them on their usual terms.
A new project confirmed
In an email to the FundTap team in July 2024, the owner said a new project had been confirmed and asked for more funding room.
Their funding limit was raised that month. The project could get under way with invoices funded as the work needed, rather than waiting on each payment. That year became their biggest, with 25 invoices funded.
In July 2025, the owner told the FundTap team a client had paid a deposit on a systems architecture job, with the balance still owing. They sent that invoice through to fund the balance.
There for the next project
They funded 20 invoices in 2025 and 14 in 2026 to September. Between projects, with the clients paying on their usual terms, the account waits at no charge until the next invoice the owner wants funded.
