Paid by the day, invoiced at month end
The business is a management consultancy in Sydney. It gives consulting advice to its clients and bills by the day, with the days invoiced at the end of the month.
When they signed up, the main piece of work was a long contract already locked in, with the work running well into the following year. The invoice at month end covered a lot of days, and the payment came after it.
Set-up costs and new hires first
The plan was to grow the practice around that contract.
At sign-up in March 2025, the owner told the FundTap team they wanted the month-end invoice paid in advance while they hired more people. The owner also mentioned contractors to pay for extra work they hoped to win, and the costs of setting the business up.
Every one of those costs lands before the invoice it comes out of is paid. A new hire is paid from their first month, a contractor when the work is done, and the set-up costs as they come.
Funding the month-end invoice
They signed up in March 2025 and funded their first invoice in the month they signed up. They funded three between March and May 2025, with the fee quoted upfront on each one.
The client’s payment still came to the practice exactly as the contract set out.
Room to build the team
With the month-end invoice funded, the money arrived while the new people and the set-up costs were being paid for, rather than after. The contract was already won, and the practice could build around it without waiting on the contract’s payment dates.
The last of those invoices was funded in May 2025, and there has been no charge since. The invoices run on their usual timing, and the account is there for the next time a hire or a bill lands ahead of the invoice that pays for it.
The timeline
- March 2025 Signed up with a long contract locked in, and new hires and set-up costs ahead of its month-end invoices.
- March 2025 Connected their accounting software.
- March 2025 Funded their first invoice.
- May 2025 Funded the most recent invoice, the third since March.
In numbers
- Month end when the days worked on the contract are invoiced
- 3 invoices funded between March and May 2025
- 1 invoice funded in March 2025, the month they signed up
Sound like your business?
The contract is won and the invoice goes out at month end, but the new hire starts before it’s paid. Fund that invoice while you build the team.
Fund a specific invoice when the timing doesn’t work. Pay nothing when it does.
