From online sales to wholesale
The business sells premium pet products. Until recently, most of its sales came through its own website, where customers pay upfront and the money arrives with the order.
Then it moved into wholesale and started supplying two big retailers. One pays in about a fortnight. The other takes two months.
Wholesale changes the timing completely. The retailers order in bulk, the stock has to be bought and shipped first, and the payment comes on their terms.
Buying the stock first
When they signed up in July 2024, the owner told the FundTap team that buying the stock for these orders was tying up their cashflow.
Another purchase order was already lined up, waiting only for the stock to arrive before it shipped.
The owner also explained that the margins on the wholesale lines were healthy, so the business only had to get the first few orders through.
Funding the retail invoices
In July 2024 they funded their first two invoices. Once a retail order had shipped and been invoiced, the owner could fund that invoice instead of waiting out the retailer’s terms.
The owner picks which invoices to fund and sees the fee before committing, so it can be weighed against the margin on the order. The retailers pay the business as they normally would.
Room to take the bigger orders
With the retail invoices funded, the money from one order could pay for the stock for the next. That’s what growing into wholesale needs: the next purchase order filled without waiting on the last.
In February 2025, the owner asked the FundTap team about a higher funding limit. March 2025 was their busiest month, with six invoices funded.
Quiet since the last big run
They funded four invoices in 2024 and nine in 2025, 13 in all. Nothing has been funded since March 2025, and the account has cost them nothing while it waits.
When the next big retail order lands, the funding is there for it.
